Race Description

The Heathen Challenge, recognized as Colorado's longest continuously running ski mountaineering race, is set to return on February 2, 2025. Taking place at the scenic Sunlight Mountain Resort, this event is organized by Cripple Creek Backcountry and Strafe Outerwear and welcomes both seasoned athletes and newcomers eager to join the dynamic skimo community. Registrations for the event will close at 4 PM on February 1, 2025, giving participants ample opportunity to prepare for the exhilarating experience ahead.

The competition features two distinct race categories: the Elite Race, covering approximately 11 miles with a demanding 5,500 feet of elevation gain, and the Recreational Race, which presents a 6-mile course with a 2,000-foot ascent. Each course is designed to challenge participants, whether they are veteran racers or those testing their limits in the sport for the first time. Participants are advised to stay tuned for potential changes in course maps due to weather and snow conditions. For those ready to take on the Heathen Challenge, registration is now open.
